Meals on Wheels and Senior Services ofCollin County announced Thursday that it will be participating in the national Mayors ForMeals Day on March 20. Mayors For Meals is a component of the March ForMeals national campaign held during the month of March. This campaign is initiatedand sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) to raiseawareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities.

Over the years, Collin County mayors have shown their support by accompanying thelocal volunteers delivering the meals to homebound seniors. Each mayor or his or herappointed representative “rides along” on one local route, and not only delivers the meal, but has the opportunity to spend time with each senior. Invitations will be going out toeach mayor asking for their participation and support by delivering meals on March 20th.

“The food and human contact we provide to seniors in Collin County is needed morethan ever,” said Ray Ricchi, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels and Senior Servicesof Collin County. “The senior population is growing in this county and for over 37years, Meals on Wheels has fulfilled its mission to promote the health, dignity andindependence of those 60 years old and older while combating isolation. Each mayor’sparticipation in the Mayors For Meals program is a concrete way in which each city canunderscore its support of this dynamic meal program,” Ricchi added.

In 2012, Meals on Wheels of Collin County delivered over 188,000 meals to over 1,200seniors throughout the 848 square land miles of the county. The 65 daily routes aredelivered by an average of 749 community volunteers each month between 11:00 and1:00.
