Make a Difference Day

Make a Difference Day is Coming to McKinney

Make a Difference Day,  the largest national day of community service, is coming to McKinney on Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. While millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others, a variety of projects are in need of volunteers right here in McKinney.

Make a difference in our community. Click here to go directly to the project list and sign up for the one that appeals the most.

Below is a complete description of volunteer opportunities.

Make a Difference Day Projects 2013 (Detailed)

CASA of Collin County, Inc-101 E. Davis, 9am to 2pm

Volunteers will give the CASA property a fall ‘make over’, including landscaping and clean up, interior organization and cleaning, and oiling the wood paneling around the office to help maintain a clean and professional feel for our clients.

City of McKinney-Reuben Johnson Elementary, 3400 Ash Lane, 9am to Noon

Project #1-The Storm Water Inlet Marking (SWIM) project is an environmental public education program sponsored by the City of McKinney. The project’s goal is to raise awareness of storm water issues and encourage residents to protect water resources. Every storm water inlet in McKinney must be marked to deter residents from dumping trash and chemicals into the waterways. Volunteer teams will install aluminum storm markers at designated storm inlets and distribute door hangers with information about the inlet marking with steps to keep inlets clean.

Project #2-We need your help to Keep Our Community Clean! Did you know that: • Over 230 million tons of garbage are produced annually in the United States—that equals 4.5 pounds per person per day.• Clean, trash-free neighborhoods are safer for children to play in.• Clean communities promote a positive community identity and can result in increased economic development. The City of McKinney Storm water Management Program invites you to help to create cleaner, safer, healthier, and more economically viable places to live, work, and play. The Keep Our Community Cleanup event provides an opportunity for McKinney residents to clean up the city by collecting litter, along our roadsides, neighborhoods, parks and waterways. Homeowners associations, church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, families and individuals are encouraged to join the fun. Students also can earn community service hours. The Storm Water Management department has identified 3 locations in the city near Reuben Johnson Elementary to clean up. Gloves and trash bags will be supplied to all community volunteers.
