McKinney High alumnus Hunter Mahan became the top-ranked American in the World Golf Rankings after winning the Shell Houston Open on Sunday by one stroke over Carl Petterson.
Mahan, a 1999 MHS graduate, shot 17 under par for the event, including a final-round 71 on Sunday.
He wished his father a happy birthday in the post-match interview with CBS and said he’s glad to be playing well going into this week’s first major of the season, The Masters.
Also, Mahan moved to No. 1 in the 2012 FedExCup Standings.
Sunday’s victory was Mahan’s fifth on the PGA Tour.
