Local Candidates to Face May 27 Runoff After Close Primary Elections

votedThere was a virtual tie in the Republican race for Collin County Commissioner, Precinct 1, with Susan Fletcher receiving 2,592 votes (43 percent) and Mark Reid receiving 2,532 (42 percent) during Tuesday’s primary. Ann Lieber received 874 votes (15 percent).

Reid had been appointed to fill the unexpired term vacated by Matt Shaheen in December. No Democrats filed, meaning the Republican winner will run opposed in the general election Nov. 4.

Meanwhile, State Sen. Ken Paxton of McKinney is headed to a runoff with Dan Branch for the Republican race for Attorney General.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting in Tuesday’s primary election, Paxton had 44 percent of the votes (566,080) compared to Dan Branch’s 33 percent (426,561). Barry Smitherman held 22 percent (281,050).

Houston lawyer Sam Houston was unopposed in the Democratic bid for AG.

The candidates are hoping to replace Republican Greg Abbott, who is running for governor.
