McKINNEY, Texas (June 19, 2015) – The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) is partnering with local non-profit agency Alliance of Elite Youth Leadership to host a firefighter and emergency medical service (EMS) career exploration camp for students entering 8th grade through 11th grade. Two camp sessions will be held July 13-17 and Aug. 10-14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McKinney Public Safety Building, 2200 Taylor-Burk Drive.
The camp focuses on firefighter and emergency medical skills giving participants a realistic view of fire service careers. Examples of camp activities include:
- tour local fire stations and fire-related organizations and facilities
- hands-on experience handling ladders, hoses, fire extinguishers, self-contained breathing apparatus and personal protective equipment
- career planning and preparation
- teamwork, problem-solving, networking and leadership development
Each session is limited to 10 campers, with applications accepted on first-come first-serve basis. The camp fee is $25 for McKinney residents and $50 for non-residents. The fee covers a T-shirt, breakfast, lunch, snacks and transportation costs. Limited scholarships are available.
“All of the lessons and activities are taught by emergency services professionals, which gives participants the opportunity to network and connect with individuals working in their area of interest,” said MFD spokesperson Stacie Durham. “Prior experience and knowledge of the fire and emergency response services is not required.”
