The MCA Lady Mustangs took down Rockwall Heritage Academy 43-35 Tuesday night at the RISE athletic facility in Rockwall.
The Mustangs had narrowly defeated RHCA at MCA’s home tourney 37-35 and Rockwall was spoiling for an upset on their home floor. The Lady Mustangs would have none of it , however, and jumped out to an early 15-6 first quarter lead. The Mustangs broke the Eagle press repeatedly early and turned them into easy baskets. In the half-court the Mustangs went to their two leading scorers, senior Kaitlynn McAdams and freshman Hannah Wilks repeatedly to attack the Eagles zone defense. Wilks, playing through illness, responded with six first quarter points and McAdams three. Senior Co-Captain Sid Thompson pitched in four and sophomore Kaycee Zanetell dropped in a pair of free throws.
Heritage got their offense going with attacks to the basket as MCA started to get in foul trouble. McAdams picked up her second foul early and got her third just before intermission. With the last one the Eagles converted two freethrows for their 12th and 13th points of the quarter. Fortunately for the Mustangs, Wilks continued her torrid scoring with 9 points herself in the stanza. The Mustang lead was reduced by two at 26-19 at the half.
The third period was all defense, with MCA registering five points and holding the Eagles to three. Wilks hit a putback and a freethrow and point guard Sarah Grubbs hit a 12 foot pull up jumper, but little else would fall and it was 31-22 after three.
The Eagles tried to increase their pressure in the fourth which resulted in numerous fouls and the Mustangs stretched their lead at the charity stripe. Wilks hit four of four. Grubbs hit two of four and McAdams and Thompson each hit one of two. McAdams and Grubbs added buckets against the press and MCA prevailed 43-35 to move to 12-6 on the season.
Though under the weather, Fr Wilks had a monster game with 22 points and 13 rebounds. McAdams followed in both categories with eight and six. From the point Grubbs had six points, two assists and two steals. Thompson had five points, six rebounds and three steals. Zanetell ended with two points and two steals.
