The McKinney Christian Academy Lady Mustangs were honored at the District 4-3A meeting with multiple honors reflective of their successful undefeated district run. Senior Kaitlynn McAdams was named MVP of the district and was named to the 12 member all district first team along with three other Lady Mustangs. Sophomore point Julie James, freshman Hannah Wilks and junior guard Sarah Grubbs were all named to the first team while senior Sidney Thompson and sixth man sophomore Kaycee Zanetell were named to the second team. Freshman back up post Makenna Schulte was given Honorable Mention.
In addition, for the second straight year the Mustangs garnered the Freshman of the Year award. given this year to Wilks, who had an outstanding freshman campaign averaging 15 points per game and 11 rebounds per game in district play, leading the Mustangs in both categories. She succeeds the Mustangs’ James who won the award last year. James had another exceptional year as she directed the Mustang attack from the point. With a well rounded game she averaged 12 points and seven rebounds a game while also leading the Mustangs in assists and steals per game with five and seven respectively. James and Grubbs were also named to the All Defensive team. Grubbs averaged four points per game and three steals per game and was a shut down defender, who along with James, stymied the guard play of the Mustangs opponents all season.
The Mustangs held their district opponents to an average of 33 points per game while scoring 51 per game themselves in establishing an average margin of victory of 18 points. The Mustangs had four blowout wins over Canyon Creek and First Baptist Academy while defeating 3rd place Brook Hill twice by and average of 12 points. They also swept defending district champion Dallas Lutheran, winning the first game by 10 and then surviving a double OT thriller 55-52 to claim the district title. In a testament to the strong play of his team, Coach Brock was named Coach of the Year.
McAdams who finished 2nd in the MVP voting last year averaged 14.6 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks per game in the district. Playing an inside outside game she posted inside and then stepped out to lead the Mustangs in three point shots with 30 on the season. Rebecca Bartel who led Dallas Lutheran in scoring with 19 points per game was named Offensive Player of the Year and Samantha Anderson, Brook Hll’s 6-3 center, who averaged 17 rebounds and six blocks per game was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior Thompson was named to the 2nd team for the second straight year. She helped form part of the Mustangs formidable frontline along with McAdams and Wilks. She averaged four points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game and had one of her best games with eight points and five rebounds in the OT epic versus Lutheran. Sophomore Zanetell and freshman Schulte saw plenty of playing time and are part of the next generation of Mustangs that will try to replace Thompson and McAdams next year. They will have plenty of work to do if they want to surpass this years 23-7, District Champion and Regional Finalist team.
