The McKinney Christian Academy Lady Mustangs opened TAPPS District 4-3A play Friday night by defeating Canyon Creek on the road 49-20. The Mustangs jumped all over the Cougars with a smothering full court press in building a 23-4 first quarter lead. The ‘Stangs were hot from the opening tip as Kaitlynn McAdams tipped to freshman forward Mckenna Schulte who passed to fellow Frosh Hannah Wilks who, in turn, hit Soph Kaycee Zanetell for a backside layup and the Mustangs were off and running. The Mustangs were down two starters, Co-Captains senior forward Sid Thompson and sophomore point Julie James, due to absence and injury, but the outcome was never in doubt versus the very young and out-manned Cougars.
With the Big Cat, McAdams, roaming the middle of the press, picking off passes and driving in for layups for eight first quarter points and freshman Wilks, returning to her former school and pouring in 7, the Mustangs were in firm control of the game. Shooting guard Sarah Gubbs, moved to the point in James’ absence was a menace on defense converting two quick steals into layups. Shulte added a putback to finish off the flurry.
The Mustangs opened the second with two quick baskets by McAdams two stretch the lead to 27-4 and then dropped to a half court defense for the remainder of the half. The Mustangs diminished bench saw considerable action in the period and the offensive output slowed a bit. Grubbs added a jumper and sophomore Lily Thompson added a bucket for a 31-8 halftime margin.
McAdams, the Mustangs senior Co-Captain and leading scorer is also the Mustangs leading 3-point shooter. She opened the third with a trey bomb from the right side and Zanetell added 5 in the period while the Mustang man to man stifled CCA. Any Cougar making their way to the lane had to face McAdams who swatted seven shots away and grabbed 10 boards. Wilks, Shulte and junior Kylie Madry added baskets and it was 45-10 after three.
Wilks added two free-throws in the 4th and Schulte scored on a running layup on the fast break for the last Mustang points and MCA goes to 13-6 and 1-0 on the season.
McAdams ended with 15 points 10 boards, seven blocks, and four steals. Wilks followed with her own double double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Zanetell had seven points and three steals while Grubbs scored six and added five steals and five boards. Freshman Schulte, starting her first game, had six points and added nine rebounds. Madry and Lily Thompson finished with two each and Thompson recorded four steals.
MCA is next in action in a non-district affair versus long time rival Legacy Christian Academy Tuesday night at MCA’s Joshua gymnasium. They will follow that game with the biggest game of the season thus far as they travel to Bullard Bookhill for the second game of district. MCA and Brookhill are thought by some to be the early favorites to contend for this years district title.
