Lady Mustangs Head Into Thanksgiving Break with Winning Record
The McKinney Christian Academy girls basketball team blitzed the HSAA Angels 56-20 Friday night to raise their record to 3-2 on the season. The Mustangs go into the Thanksgiving break at 3-2 and will be next in action Monday, Dec. 2, vs. North Dallas Adventist Academy 6 p.m. at the Bob Knight Fieldhouse.On Friday, the Mustangs played aggressive defense throughout, holding the Angels to a mere free throw in the opening quarter. MCA was a bit sluggish itself with only eight points on 4 of 5 free throws by Hannah Wilks and baskets by Julie James and Makenna Schulte.
All of the Angels’ first half points were from the free-throw line as they went 6 of 7 in the second for seven first half points, while the Mustangs began to loosen the strings a little on their end. James scored again on a drive, Anna Keebler scored on a breakaway after a steal and leading scorer Wilks poured in eight more for a 20-7 lead at the break.
The Mustangs really got going in the second half, maintaining good defensive pressure and converting layups on the other end. The Mustangs also began to play long ball as Kayce Zanetell dropped in two from 19 feet 9 inches and Wilks and Lily Thompson added one each as the Mustangs raced away.
Wilks ended with 19 points and 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. James closed with 11 points, 9 steals, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Schulte had 9 points and 4 rebounds. Zanetell had 6 points and 5 steals and Keebler had 6 points and 6 steals. Thompson had 3 points and 2 assists and Katie Pawlish added a bucket.
