Kyra’s Kitchen: The DIY Burger

Here is a radical thought… instead of ‘driving thru’ and ‘stopping by’ and ‘picking up’ your order of hamburgers, how about starting a trend called the DIY Burger…. Making your OWN burgers AT HOME?  They are cheaper, healthier, [you can control what goes into them], easy and quick to make.  Plus you can add the sauces and relishes of your choice

There are so many alternatives for both burgers and sauces I have divided the article into two parts.

This week, in Part 1, we will look at recipes for classic burgers using beef and turkey.

Next week we will get more adventurous and offer recipes featuring salmon, chick pea, vegetable, and burgers with an international flavor!

Let’s get on with it—

It’s All About The Burger

1 lb ground sirloin
½ teaspoon salt
Stir the salt into the meat. Divide the meat into four and form patties.
Heat a heavy skillet, add a little oil,  and cook the patties 1 minute each side or until they are done to your liking.

Now how difficult was that?

Now you can start getting creative!

In the next recipes, mix together the ingredients and follow the directions for the basic burger for making the patties and cooking. (Note all recipes make 4 burgers but you can double the recipe if you wish.)

1 lb ground LEAN beef
¼ teaspoon garlic salt
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon pepper

1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon taco seasoning [from a package] 3 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro
2/3 cup shredded jack cheese
1 -2 drops Tabasco sauce

1 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon chopped garlic [either bottled or fresh] 2 tablespoons powdered ranch dressing
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper

THE WORKS BURGER  [This is where you throw EVERYTHING into the burger!] 1 lb ground beef
2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
½ onion finely chopped
1 egg
2 tablespoons sour cream
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 lb ground turkey
3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
½ onion – peeled – diced
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon soy sauce
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper

The Buns Have it!
You have a choice of plain buns, potato buns, whole grain buns, slider buns, English muffins, thin buns, even Kaiser rolls.  Pick whatever you fancy – every bun will go with every burger.

The FUN is in The FIXINs!

When I serve burgers, I set out a buffet of fixings and let the guests build their own burger.  They love it……….

Pile on a choice of:
Cooked crumbled bacon
Shredded or sliced cheese
Assorted dressings – Ranch, Thousand Island
Shredded carrots
Sliced cucumbers
Pickled jalapeno peppers
And of course…  CHIPS!

(By the way…  In case you didn’t get the message, DIY stands for ‘Do It Yourself’!)
