Kyra’s Kitchen: Food News in Brief….

The unusually mild temperatures in Europe this winter, have produced one of the best crops of Spaghetti in history.  The towns of Ticino in Switzerland and Fulyah in Italy are reporting an exceptional harvest.

There is always the concern that during the last two weeks of March there may be a late frost which could damage the crop, but this year – with warm weather – the spaghetti is all ready for harvesting and then set out to dry.

The question is often asked, “How do the growers manage to produce such uniform strands?” But that is the result of years of efforts by the plant breeders.

On April 1 there will be a celebration of the harvest with a traditional spaghetti meal.  Thereafter the spaghetti will be packed for distribution to all its devotees.

A burger company recently came up with a special promotion for their left-handed customers – offering Left-Handed Whopper Burgers.  The promotion had to be cancelled however when their right handed customers strenuously objected citing, ‘discrimination’.

It has come to the attention of the Idaho Department of Agriculture that a little known proviso of the new Health Care Law orders that all potatoes be removed from school menus.  Instead, a helping of Cauliflower is to be substituted.
The Idahoans are irate and have now formed a POTATO MILITIA – visiting every school and ensuring there is a ‘Potato on every Plate’.

Please join me in remembering the Pillsbury Doughboy who died yesterday of a yeast infection resulting from constant pokes in his belly.  He was 71.

He was buried in a lightly greased coffin piled high with flours.

The Doughboy was lovingly described as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded.  He was not considered a very “smart” cookie, wasting much of his time on half-baked schemes.  Although he was a little flaky at times Doughboy will be remembered for his turnovers – and  as a positive roll model for millions.

He is survived by his wife Play Dough, and two children John Dough and Jane Dough.  He is also survived by his father Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes

And last let us join with the members of Boodle’s  Gentlemen’s Club in St. James, London
[Established in 1784] in celebrating April 1 with their favorite ‘pudding’:

BOODLES ORANGE FOOL

3 oranges
1 lemon
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup heavy whipping cream
¼ Angel Food cake cut into thin slices

Grate the zest of 2 of the oranges and the lemon into a small bowl.
Cut the fruit, squeeze out the juice and add it to the zest.
Add the sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Whisk the cream until it reaches soft peaks.
Gradually whisk in the juice.

Arrange the Angel Food cake slices in a single layer on the bottom of a serving dish and round the sides.
Pour the orange cream into the lined bowl, cover with saran wrap and chill for at least here hours.  [You can make it a day ahead.]

Peel the last orange and remove the segments [see note]. Arrange on top of the ‘pudding’ just before serving.

To ‘segment’ an orange:
Cut off the rind and pith.
Slide a sharp knife down between the segment and the dividing skin and lift out. Then gently lift out the remaining segments.
