The Kiwanis Club of McKinney held their annual Triathlon events the weekend of May 5th and 6th. The Triathlons are a major fund-raiser for the Kiwanis club. All proceeds from the events are used to support club charity projects and/or donations to local charities.
In April of this year, McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller announced the McKinney Health Challenge at the City Council meeting. The Kiwanis Club joined the community-wide partnership of organizations to make McKinney the fittest community in the country by including their Annual Triathlon(s) as two of the 8 featured events. By the way, Mayor Loughmiller participated in the adult Triathlon and took 3rd place in his division.
The McKinney Kiwanis Club thanks all of our sponsors and volunteers for supporting our fund-raising events and community service work. The clubs major fund-raising sponsors are: Baylor Medical Center at McKinney, Tourchmark Corporation, CK SPORTS, Raytheon, Independent Bank, Fiat of McKinney, Encore Wire, McKinney Community Development Corporation, Mike’s Health Collection and Market Street.
Saturday, May 5th, the Kids Triathlon was run beginning an 8:00 in the morning at McKinney High School with over 140 kids participating. The kids swam in the McKinney High School Pool, rode there bikes in the local neighborhood and ran along Wilson Creek Blvd. and finished the race at McKinney High School.
Sunday, May 6th, the Adult Triathlon began at 7:00 in the morning with over 250 participants. After a 300-yard swim in the high school pool, the contestants rode their bicycles 11.5 miles out by the airport and then ran 3.6 miles through downtown and Historic McKinney neighborhoods.
Joe Sparling, Kiwanis Club President, stated that he was very pleased with this year’s participation and expects the year over year growth of the event to continue. He was so inspired with the number of “first time” participants that he plans to enter the Triathlon himself next May.
