Area pastor Derrick Johnson told The Dallas Morning News that he has suspended his campaign and will cede the mayoral race to incumbent Brian Loughmiller.
“I found it very difficult to look for or make up negative things about Brian Loughmiller,” Johnson told The Morning News on Tuesday. “One of my reasons for withdrawing is there is nothing I can disagree with the guy about.”
Johnson had told TownSquareBuzz.com in recent weeks that he’d entered the mayoral race — filing within an hour of the deadline —in part to bring more diversity to McKinney’s leadership positions. Johnson is black.
On Tuesday, Johnson told The Morning News that he discovered that he and Loughmiller agree on many key issues.
Johnson’s name cannot be removed from the ballot — that deadline has passed. So, voters will still have an opportunity to vote for him if they choose. Johnson told The Morning News that he might run for mayor in 2017.
