In auditions held on October 8, 12 McKinney High School vocalists, 19 McKinney North High School vocalists and 22 McKinney Boyd High School vocalists were named to the Texas Music Educators Region 25 All-Region Choirs.
In the second step of a multi-step audition process, twenty-six of these students will perform in Pre-Area auditions at McKinney Boyd High School on November 15. Each hopeful participant joins approximately 15,000 other Texas high school student vocalists competing to be named to one of the prestigious Texas All-State Choirs. The competition is demanding. Only the top 400 students are selected to rehearse and perform as an All-State Choir Member at the Texas Music Educators Convention slated for San Antonio in mid-February.
“We are so proud of the individual efforts of all of our choir students who go through this grueling process,” stated Roy Renzenbrink, Director of Fine Arts for McKinney ISD.
“It is a demanding process in which our students go ‘head to head’ against exceptional vocalists throughout the region. They are rated on their vocal performance of selected literature and their sight-reading ability demonstrated by accurately performing an eight-measure melody line after only a 30 second study period. It takes talent, preparation and calm nerves to deliver under this pressure. We are also very proud of the great teaching these fine musicians have had under their high school choir directors.”
The choral directors at McKinney High School are Cindy Johnston and Lindsay Barnes. The McKinney North High School choral directors are Steven Nelmns and Lindsay Barnes, and the choral directors at McKinney Boyd High School are Melissa Peden and Joe Tomkins.
