Grant Applications Available to McKinney Arts Commission on May 20

Submitted by Anna Clark, City of McKinney

On May 20, the McKinney Arts Commission will begin their annual grant application process. Groups applying for a grant are required to attend one of two grant-writing workshops, held to provide information and assistance. The McKinney Arts Commission will present the workshops on Thursday, May 23 from 9 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at McKinney City Hall, 222 N. Tennessee St.

For groups interested in applying for a grant, the timeline, guidelines and application are available for review and completion online at www.mckinneytexas.org/macgrants. In addition, groups must attend and complete a mandatory application review meeting. All applications are available online starting May 20 and are due July 17.

Last year, the commission received applications from arts groups seeking more than $199,400 in grants during the current funding cycle and funded 15 area groups.

“This year, we have broadened the non-profit groups who may apply for arts grants to include organizations whose primary mission is culture-related. The project they request funding for must still be an arts-related project, but the mission of the organization may be related to culture in addition to the arts. So if a cultural organization wanted to sponsor an art show, for example, they would be eligible to apply for a grant,” said McKinney Arts Commission Chair Linda Spina.

The Arts Commission serves as the advisory board to the City Council and city management in matters involving the close cooperation between the city and private citizens, institutions and agencies interested in or conducting activities relating to the arts. The Commission makes recommendations to the City Council in regard to expenditures of City funds for the purpose of promoting or sustaining the arts in McKinney.

The group reviews the funding proposals for arts programs held within the city, and the funding comes from allocations made by City Council. The Commission’s mission is to “create a vibrant and viable arts community in which diverse, high-quality arts opportunities are available to McKinney residents and visitors.”
