The McKinney Christian Academy Lady Mustangs enter the Area Round of the TAPPS 3A Girls Basketball Playoffs after defeating Carrollton Christian Academy 57-28 on Tuesday.
MCA will next face a district 4-3A rival, the Bullard Brook Hill Lady Guard who finished as the No. 3 in district 4, but defeated the No. 2 team from district 3-A, Colleyville Covenant, 54-26, on Tuesday night.
The Lady Mustangs will host Brook Hill on Friday night at 7:30 at Joshua Gymnasium.
The Lady Mustangs opened the playoffs at home in the first round. They began with a stifling press that barely allowed the Lady Saints from Carrollton a shot at the basket. In one of only two shots the Mustangs allowed, Kiersten Goff of CCA drained a three pointer from the top of the key, but by that time the Mustangs had already built an 18-0 lead.
The Mustang press forced many Saint turnovers in the forecourt, and when they threw it long Sidney Thompson picked them off at midcourt. The Mustangs made the most of their scoring opportunities on an assortment of layups and three-point shots with 4 of the 5 starters scoring in the opening stanza.
Kaitlynn McAdams led the barrage with nine points, including two three-pointers and Julie James followed with seven and a trey of her own. Hannah added two baskets and Sarah Grubbs one. When the smoke had cleared, the Mustangs were up 22-3 after one quarter. The scoring slowed a little in the second , but James stayed hot with another trey and eight more points. McAdams had another long ball herself and it was 33-8 at intermission.
McAdams hit another three, her fourth of the night, to open the third, and all five starters scored in a brief encore to open the third. Midway through the period the starters began to give way to the reserves and Makenna Shulte got on the board with a baseline 12-footer. It was 49-16 after three periods.
In the fourth, the Saints closed a little as the Mustang second unit ran the show. Lilly Thompson added two freethrows and Shulte scored on a putback in addition to baskets by McAdams and Grubbs.
McAdams and James led the scoring for MCA with 17 each. McAdams added 4 blocks and James contributed 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Wilks, back in action after missing one game, had 8 points, 7 caroms and 5 steals in her return. Grubbs ended with 5 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Sidney Thompson had one of her best all around games with 4 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Shulte had 4 points and 4 boards and Lily Thompson finished with 2 points and 2 steals.
