McKinney Christian Academy’s girls basketball team mounted a fierce rally but fell short in the end to the HSAA Angels, 53-48, Tuesday night at the MCA Joshua Gymnasium. It was MCA’s first loss of the season.
The Mustangs were trying to make up for a poor third quarter in which they had fallen behind 46-30 to the hot-shooting Angels. HSAA had broken open a relatively close game with 18 third quarter points, including their fifth and sixth three-pointers of the night. The Mustangs showed a little of their mettle by turning the tables on the Angels in the fourth, ramping up the defensive pressure and outscoring the Angels 18-7 in the last stanza.
MCA closed to 53-48 with 27 seconds left and had the ball after another steal by point guard Julie James. The Mustangs set for a three-point play under their basket but turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and the comeback was extinguished. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 2-1 on the season.
The Angels began the contest with a balance scoring attack, as four Angels scored in the opening stanza. That included three-pointers by Sarah Williams and Sarah Bowen. The Mustangs were decidedly less than balanced as Kaitlynn McAdams scored all eight points for the Mustangs, complete with a trey of her own and it was 14-8 after one.
The second period was well contested. Williams hit another three and the Angels’ Tori Phillips bombed one from the top of the key. Freshman Hannah Wilkes got on the board with five points for the Mustangs and James added four before McAdams hit another trey. McAdams was whistled for a foul on a block at the buzzer and Kalyn Thomas of HSAA hit one of two for a 28-20 Angel lead at the half.
As mentioned, the game turned for the worse for the Mustangs in the third as the Angels hit for 18 points in the period. Five Angels would score and two more Angels would knock down threes, in Emily Thompson and Emily Winesapple. The Mustangs countered with four by McAdams and two each by Wilks, James and Kayce Zanetell to keep MCA within striking distance.
Down 16 entering the 4th, the Mustangs made a game of it behind James’ seven fourth-quarter points, including her first trey of the season. Wilks added 5 , McAdams 4 and Sarah Grubbs got on the board with 2.
McAdams led the Mustangs with 19 points and 10 rebounds. James followed with 13 points, 9 boards, 8 steals and 5 assists. Wilks scored 12 and led in rebounds with 11. Zanetell and Grubbs ended with 2 each.
Three Angels were in double figures, Winesapple with 14, Williams and Phillips with 13 each. The Angels recorded 7 treys for the game compared to 3 for MCA.
