Garage Giveaway and Community Expo

Last November, one little girl attending the 3e McKinney Garage Giveaway bagged up three sacks of clothes for a homeless family staying a few nights at her home.

“These baby shoes aren’t for me!” she said with a big grin.

Volunteers helped her and thousands of others carried out nearly $1 million in free household items, clothes, toys and more. 3e McKinney is doing it again Sunday, April 29, 11 am to 2 pm. Families in need are invited to come and get all they can carry out, no charge, no strings attached.

Invitations to the Giveaway were passed out at Title I schools in East McKinney, and have been distributed in both English and Spanish across the east side of the community. Families are not being screened in any way, and anyone in need is invited.

“Not only do we get the privilege of reaching out and meeting needs, but this is an opportunity to initiate and nurture relationships and share resources among the community” said Larry Robinson, 3e McKinney Executive Director. Donations are being accepted for the Garage Giveaway. Items that are gently used and in useable condition are wanted, and the more the better.

“It’s not about the stuff, it’s about the hearts of those who are touched and helped. This is blessings from one person to another,” Robinson said.

Items can be dropped off at the Garage Giveaway site, Old Settlers’ Recreation Center at 1201 East Louisiana, McKinney, TX 75069. Drop off times are ONLY Friday, April 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those who attend or volunteer will also enjoy live music, kids’ games and activities, food and more. And, of course, it’s all free. Garage Giveaway also includes a health fair with health care practitioners from a number of local providers, including Baylor Medical Center. There will be free eye exams and glasses by Dr. Alan Upchurch, Dr. Eric Newberry and the Lions’ Club of McKinney. Other providers include Elevation Chiropractic, dental hygienists and dental assistants. Frontier Communications in Allen will provide a job fair for bilingual applicants.

The North Texas Job Corps will participate as well. This will be part of a community expo that will include massages by Universal Body Wellness, Veterans’ grant program information from Community Lifeline Center, car care by Nissan of McKinney and haircuts by Sports Clips. All services are free.
