Game of the Week: Boyd Girls Win Emotional 1-Game Playoff

By: Mike Bruu, TSB Staff

Win or go home. In sports there is nothing more dramatic, heart-racing, or just plain fun than one game with two teams entire postseason aspirations on the line.

For the McKinney Boyd girls basketball team, Friday night’s 51-47 District 10-4A fourth-place tiebraker victory over Garland Lakeview Centennial had all kinds of emotions.

Facing huge odds coming into the week of even having an opportunity to play a one-game playoff Friday night, the Lady Broncos pulled off a huge upset on the road against district champs Sachse on Tuesday, and with the help of a Garland Lakeview Centennial loss to Garland, set up a win-or-go-home matchup for the chance to achieve the final playoff berth from the district.

Just like all season for the Lady Broncos, they found themselves in a dogfight against the Lady Patriots of Lakeview. In front of a large and energetic Boyd crowd that included the entire Lady Bronco girls soccer team at McKinney High School, Coach Bretagne Galbreath and her players found themselves trailing 44-38 with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.

“There was a moment with about two minutes left to go and we were down by six. A couple of them, you could see it on their face that they had kind of given up,” Galbreath said. Boyd would take a timeout to huddle up and calm down, a move that proved to change the direction of the game in the favor of the Lady Broncos.

“But after a good ripping,” Galbreath said, “they went out there and did what had to be done.”

In the final 2:45 of the game, led by sophomore Haley Carruthers and junior Micaela Gonzalez, who had 7 and 4 points respectively, the Lady Broncos went on a 13-3 run to seal the win.

After a long and emotional celebration on the court with players, parents, and students all joining in on the fun, a very happy and proud Galbreath spoke about her teams accomplishment of earning Boyd’s second straight girls basketball playoff appearance.

“The girls this season have overcome a lot of adversity,” she said, “a lot of injuries, and some inner things going in our team that’s just mentally challenging, and they’ve over come that.”

In a game full of turnovers for both sides, there was also no shortage of physical play on the court, especially in the paint. Both teams were in the bonus early in each half, a testament to Boyd’s and Lakeview’s willingness to drive to ball in the lane and look for contact down under the glass. In Galbreath’s mind this game was very similar to the two teams first matchups in district play, where physicality and timely execution were key to the outcomes of the games.

“Both games we played before were really physical,” Galbreath said. “We kind of expected that, you know. We work on going up strong and we practice hitting them with the dummies and get after them in practice. Defensively at the end of the game, we ended up changing our defense, which I think took them off guard.”

With the victory Friday night McKinney Boyd moves to 15-19 on the season, a record that isn’t typical of a playoff-bound group. But after a four-game win streak to end the regular season that included the upset against Sachse and Friday’s victory against the Lakeview, the Lady Broncos are drawing comparisons to a certain professional team that just won a championship earlier this week.

“We accept that role (as the underdog), you know. We are the New York Giants,” said Galbreath with a chuckle. “That’s what we want to be.”

While it waits to be known whether the Lady Broncos will have the same fortunes as Big Blue did on Super Sunday, the playoff road for Boyd begins Tuesday night at Wylie High School where they will take on Dallas Skyline, the 15th ranked team in the state according to TABC. This will be the second meeting between these two schools this season. The first matchup in December went in favor of Skyline, when they defeated Boyd 51-33.

The Boyd-Skyline game is the second game of a doubleheader at Wylie High Tuesday night. The game time is expected to be approximately 7:30.
