Game Day: TSB Previews Tonight’s MISD Football Games

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

Every week, TSB will give you all of the last minute news and notes you need to know before the games kick off on Friday nights. Read scouting reports straight from the head coaches, get the latest injury news, and get ready for another exciting week of MISD football with Football Game Day on Town Square Buzz.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium, McKinney

MHS Injury News: Running back Tommy Candela is still out with the broken collarbone. This will be the third straight game Candela has missed.

3 Questions with MHS Head Coach Jeff Smith:

Q: After a 4-0 record, where do you think that your team has improved the most?

A: “First of all, from a mental standpoint, I think the team has believes in what we are doing and they are playing with some confidence. I think that’s been a real bright spot. Obviously winning breeds good thoughts and I think that our team is mentally in a good place. From a football stand point, I think we have gotten better on defense. In the secondary we’ve gotten better and our tackling has gotten better as well. We’ve done a good job of forcing three and outs and turnovers, and our turnover ratio has been good meaning we take the ball away more than we turn it over. I think that’s a positive thing the first four weeks.”

Q: Are some of the schemes you have seen from the non-district opponents this year similar to the ones you will see when District 10-5A play begins?

A: “Yes I do. Playing the five games we will have played after this Friday, whether it be offensive formations or defensive schemes, will be a lot of what we will see in district and will help us prepare for what we will be seeing. In district we are going to see a lot more tremendous athletes and we will face some physical guys. I think Denton Ryan is going to be on that same level. Physically they are going to look great and they are going to play great. Friday night will be a great challenge as we enter the bye week.”

Q: What is the scouting report on Denton Ryan?

A: “First of all, Denton Ryan is good because they have tradition. They won a state championship just a couple of years ago and their kids have a mentality that they are going to be successful when they walk on the field. Also they have a great coaching staff that has been there consistently. They are very athletic and have some size that will be a whole new level to what we have seen. Their team is confident with what they do and they are going to come in here and be ready to play.”

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Lewisville’s Goldsmith Stadium

Boyd Injury News: Linebacker Adam Kimm is out for the year after breaking his collarbone in week two at Garland. No other injuries reported.

3 Questions with Boyd Head Coach Don Drake:

Q: What were some of the things you saw on tape from last week that showed why Bryan Driskell had such a huge first half versus Rockwall?

A: I thought we played very well up front offensively, which created opportunities for Bryan to get into the second level of the defense and create some big plays for us.  We threw the ball well which also helped to contribute to some open running lanes due to less people being focused on Bryan.  The punt return was a matter of opportunity.  Bryan being able to have the ball in space is a huge advantage for us.  Punt return can be one of those opportunities especially if the punt team does not cover as well as they need to.

Q: Do you guys feel like you have accomplished most of the goals you had laid out for the non-district portion of the schedule?

A: Heading into the Lewisville game, I feel pretty good about where we are as a team right now.  Obviously we would prefer to be undefeated at this point, but we have learned some things about ourselves through both the wins and the losses.  It is all about the process of getting better and learning to compete at a higher level.  I feel we have done that through each week of the season.  The challenge is to be able to continue that process.  We’ll see after tomorrow night, if we were able to do that for another week.

Q: What’s the scouting report on Lewisville?

A: Lewisville has a solid running attack.  They line up in various looks all predicated on establishing an advantage in the running game.  We will have to line up properly, react to our keys, and tackle well to be successful on defense.  Lewisville has a solid defensive front with some talented players in the secondary as well.  Offensively, we must execute our assignments and take advantage of field position opportunities as they arise throughout the game.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Sherman High School

North Injury News: Backup inside linebacker and wide receiver Marcus Nobles is out for the game with a banged up shoulder.

3 Questions with North Head Coach Mike Fecci:

Q: Do you guys feel like you have accomplished most of the goals you had laid out for the non-district portion of the schedule?

A: “I think we did. We started to find ourselves and I think we really found our identity in that Centennial game. We still have got to play better on third down, and that’s offensively and defensively. We have got to get more conversions and stops on third downs. We have been in a lot of them but just haven’t converted them. Also we have to be able to run the ball consistently well enough to give ourselves a chance to win. Sherman is a good team, and hopefully the three teams we played in non-district will give us a good idea of what Sherman will be like on Friday night.”

Q: What area do you think quarterback Ben Dutze has improved the most this season?

A: “I think Ben has realized that he can’t do too much. He is learning that he has to stay within the scheme and just make plays when they are there. That is one thing he started to figure out as the games went on. Ben is such a good leader and he’s really stepped up during this bye week. I think the game is slowing down for him more and more. He has seen three really top-notched defenses in a row. Hopefully that experience will benefit him because he is going to see another one this Friday.”

Q: What is the scouting report on Sherman?

A: “They are pretty good. They are physical and tough, as they always are. That’s one thing about Sherman; they are always a physical team. They are real explosive offensively and have a really good quarterback. They have a big running back and outside receivers that can go. Defensively, they have a really solid defensive line and two really big linebackers and one really big linebacker. In the secondary, just fast and good-looking kids that just run and play hard. It’s going to be a big challenge. We’ve got to go up there which adds a whole different dynamic to the whole thing, because just playing up there is a different world. We are playing on natural grass, which is not a big deal but it’s something we never do. It’s a tight stadium with close quarters and everybody is right on top of you, so it’s a neat atmosphere. Our kids are excited about it and they have played up there before so they know what it is like. We are just ready to get to playing again to be honest.”
