Game Day: TSB Previews Tonight’s MISD Football Games, Including District Openers in 5A

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

Every week, TSB will give you all of the last minute news and notes you need to know before the games kick off on Friday nights. Read scouting reports straight from the head coaches, get the latest injury news, and get ready for another exciting week of MISD football with Football Game Day on Town Square Buzz.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Plano’s John Clark Stadium

MHS Injury News: No new injuries to report. Running back Tommy Candela remains out with a broken collarbone.

3 Questions with MHS Head Coach Jeff Smith:

Q: Was there anything in particular you worked on during the bye week?

A: “Our focus was on the academic side and maintaining our grades, getting healthy and focusing on fundamentals and ourselves. We spent some time doing some early prep for Plano.”

Q: After reviewing the game film from the loss against Denton Ryan, what were you most impressed with about your team?

A: “I was impressed with the effort of our players and playing four quarters. With the turnovers we had it could have gone a different direction, but we had a chance to win to the end and I was proud of how we battled through adversity.”

Q: What is the scouting report on Plano?

A: “Big and physical. Power running football team with a 6-6 quarterback that can throw the ball very well.  We must be able to match their physicality. Defensively, they are solid and well coached, it is hard to beat them with big plays. They are very sound. They are very sound in the secondary and we will have to be patient and take what they give us. We cannot force things against this team or they will make us pay. We must be patient and move the chains and play great defense.”

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium

Boyd Injury News: No injuries to report.

3 Questions with Boyd Head Coach Don Drake:

Q: What were you most impressed in with your team after the first five games of the season?

A: “I believe we have gotten better each week. The kids have cut down on the mental mistakes and our execution overall has improved. This is the hardest working group we have ever had and their focus has been outstanding.”

Q: Is there any advantage in opening up the district season at home?

A: “I believe the biggest advantage to playing at home is your home crowd. When our fans come to the game and are excited and involved in the game by cheering on our boys, it makes a difference to our kids.”

Q: What is the scouting report on Plano West?

A: “Plano West is very explosive on offense. The QB makes them go. Quality core of skill players that threaten you over the entire field. Defensively, they are very athletic and run to the football very well.”

MCKINNEY NORTH (1-1, 1-4) AT LOVEJOY (2-0, 5-0)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Lovejoy H.S.

North Injury News: No new injuries to report. Running back Trey Smith is out for the year with a broken collarbone.

3 Questions with Quarterback Ben Dutze:

Q: After watching the game film of the victory versus Royse City, what did you come away most impressed with?

A: “After I saw the film, I was very impressed with the way our offensive line played. They stacked up against them and ran them over.”

Q: Does the loss of Trey Smith mean we could see you run the football more and more each week?

A: “Do I think so? No, because we have two very talented running backs that can run, so it should look the same for me.”

Q: What is the scouting report on Lovejoy?

A: “The scouting report is simple: play hard, play fast, and win. Lovejoy is very up-beat in tempo, so when our offense is on the field we have to control the clock. Lovejoy’s defense is very disciplined. They don’t make many mistakes so we have to execute well.”
