MCKINNEY (1-3, 5-4) VS. MCKINNEY BOYD (2-2, 5-4)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
3 Questions with Boyd head coach Don Drake:
Q: How big is this game for not only your program but the entire city of McKinney?
A: “I think it’s huge. My hope is we have a large crowd there on Friday night of people who want to watch football in McKinney, Texas. I think that is what you want in this city is to have teams fighting for wins and playoff spots against each other. I think it is a positive for everyone involved, and obviously you want to be on the winning side of things. I think its great for football in McKinney that hasn’t existed in quite awhile.”
Q: What do you think about Lions quarterback Robert Somborn and his success this season?
A: “I’ve seen Somborn play for three years now and I remember him as a sophomore when he started for them. I have always been impressed with him and I think he’s playing really well this year, as his stats would indicate. He throws the ball well and makes pretty good decisions.”
Q: What is your scouting report on McKinney High?
A: “They have quite a few weapons offensively, so you have to be able to defend the pass. They are also pretty capable of running the football as well. Obviously we are showing the kids a bunch of different things that they do so that we line up properly, and react properly at the snap defensively. Offensively, it’s all about execution. We need to start fast and I think that has been the thing that has troubled us the past couple of weeks is our ability to get going early offensively. We have to be able to establish ourselves early, and I think everyone knows that typically begins with our running game.”
3 Question with MHS head coach Jeff Smith:
Q: What has been the mentality of your players this week knowing that a win doesn’t automatically clinch a playoff spot?
A: “I think that our kids need to focus on the game. We do have a lot of different scenarios but we have to win to even be considered. I have told our kids to let us focus on that and to just go out there and play the game. The coach’s focus is ultimately on the game, but we do have to keep in mind points and scenarios to give our kids the best chance to make the playoffs. We are going to have scouts that are at games in the district that will give us updates on the scores so that we can make the right decisions.”
Q: How big is this crosstown showdown game for the city of McKinney?
A: “I think it is pretty awesome for our community to have a game like this where it is not just over bragging rights, but a game that has playoff implications. You are going to see a McKinney team advance on Friday night and that’s exciting for our community. I think it is exciting that it is going to be at Ron Poe Stadium in front of McKinney fans. Both campuses are both excited for it and the students are ready to go to the game, and it is going to be a game that the guys on both sides remember forever.”
Q: What is the scouting report on Boyd?
A: “They are very solid on defense. They have done a good job all season of really holding people defensively. They bring a lot of pressure and have some solid players on that side. Offensively, they are pretty explosive, especially with Driskell and their entire rushing game. I think they are a good team and they want to make the playoffs just as much as we do. They are going to come out ready to play.”
