Funeral Scheduled for Dowell Student Hector Hernandez

This Monday morning, August 8, as other McKinney families are thinking about back-to-school haircuts and school supplies, the friends and family of 13-year-old Hector Hernandez will be attending his funeral.

As other families look forward to the promise of another year, one can now only look back in remembrance of a young man whose life came to an abrupt end Wednesday night. Hector was in the sleeper compartment of his father’s 18-wheeler returning from a trip to El Paso when the truck hit a bridge support on Interstate 30 near Fort Worth.

His father, Hector Hernandez, Sr., was rushed to the hospital and survived the crash, but his son was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hector would have been an eighth grader this year at McKinney’s Dowell Middle School where he played percussion in the band. He will also be missed by members of his soccer team at McKinney FC. A Facebook page, “RIP Hector Hernandez ;(“ has already received 660 “likes” and is filled with condolences from friends, family and young people from his school and neighborhood. Services are at 10 a.m., Monday, at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home.
