From 5 Superlatives to 9 First-Team Selections, Boyd and MHS Enjoy District 10-5A Softball Honors

By TSB Staff

McKinney Boyd and McKinney High made quite an impression on the softball coaches in District 10-5A, earning nine first-team selections along with the top superlatives: offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year, utility player of the year, and coach of the year.

Co-Coach of the Year Moe Fritz led the district champion Broncos to an historic 2013 season. After sweeping through the playoffs with a perfect 7-0 record, the Broncos were one victory shy of the UIL Class 5A Region II Final.  After taking the first game in a best of three series against The Woodlands, Boyd suffered a heartbreaking exit from the UIL playoffs after back-to-back losses in Georgetown.

Sophomore pitcher Erin Riding dominated the circle throughout the season. She won 22 games, striking out 427 batters in 242 2/3 innings with an ERA of 1.29. She earned her co-defensive player of the year honors with crosstown rival Krissy Fontillas of McKinney High.

The Broncos’ McKenna Henry, also just a sophomore, had a tremendous season and was named offensive player of the year.

Boyd sophomore Cassandra Heller earned utility player of the year for her significant role in the field and in the batters box.

Fritz has a young team, losing only one senior. The Broncos have a bright future with Riding in the circle and Fritz leading the way.

McKinney High just missed the playoffs, falling behind the fourth-place Plano Wildcats in the district. First-year coach Terry Drain led the Lionettes in 2013 after spending six seasons as an assistant. After competing in 4A in 2012, entering the mammoth district 10-5A proved to be challenging for the Lionettes. Losing senior center fielder in Courtney Derrick for 2014 will be challenging, but behind sophomore Fontillas and juniors Chelsea Thomas and Jazmine Nelson, MHS is expected to rebound.
