Former McKinney North Softball Player Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

Submitted by TSB Community Contributor

The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on May 24 that former McKinney North softball standout, Kathy Shelton (09),  has been selected as a scholar winner for the 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, according to Baylor University athletics.

Shelton, a junior on the Baylor softball team, is a two-time All-Big 12 and Academic All-Big 12 selection for the Lady Bears. A Speech Pathology major, Shelton is coming off a season that saw her hit .333 while leading the Big 12 in stolen bases (30), and will need just 23 steals in her final season to become the program’s all-time leader.

The finalists were chosen from over 600 outstanding minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions. The NCAA is a co-sponsor of this annual award, along with Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine.

To be considered, students must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities. In 1992, Black Issues In Higher Education magazine, now Diverse, established the Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr.
