With just two weeks left to go, Week 9 was a big week for all three MISD teams. After Friday night, only two McKinney schools are still in playoff talks after North lost to Wylie East to officially eliminate them from postseason contention.
McKinney Boyd lost a chance to wrap up a playoff berth Friday night, as the Broncos were defeated by the homestanding Plano East Panthers 22-20 in the return of Panthers quarterback Mario Smalls. The Broncos dropped to 2-2 in District 10-5A and 5-4 overall, while Plano East earned its first district win to improve to 1-3 in district and 5-3 overall.
Smalls, who was a top-10 quarterback before breaking his fibula earlier this season, returned to the Panthers and led his team to their first district win of the year. Staving off elimination for one more week, Smalls returned to the field in a big way for Plano East, throwing for 269 yards on 21-of-35 passing with one touchdown and zero interceptions. Running back Lionel Wills led the team with 107 rushing yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns, including the two-yard touchdown run that put the Panthers ahead for good in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, Boyd running back Bryan Driskell returned to form after being shut down last week against Allen. Driskell ran for 140 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns, including a five-yard run in the fourth quarter to make it 22-20 Plano East. Boyd quarterback Curtis Ladd threw for 165 yards on 13-of-25 passing, while also running for 65 yards on 11 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Boyd will wrap up its regular season with a huge crosstown showdown with McKinney High. The Broncos will be the “home” team in the contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. next Friday night at Ron Poe Stadium.
