Football Scoreboard: MHS Earns First Victory Since 2010, Survives Slugfest with Mansfield Legacy

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

It was the kind of game that offensive coordinators cherish, defensive coordinators get sick over, and head coaches have to watch their blood pressures at.

After a year without a victory in 2011, the McKinney High School football team outlasted the Mansfield Legacy Broncos 55-46 on Friday night and earned its first victory in nearly two years.

Leading after three quarters 35-21, the Lions were 12 minutes away from victory and winning the first game of the year on the road at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

However, both teams would combine for 45 points the rest of the way. That included 25 from Legacy, which dropped down to 4A from 5A this year, to make the game much closer than the MHS players and fans would have liked it.

The Lions accounted for 626 total yards of offense on Friday night, including 385 yards on the ground on just 39 carries. Running back Tommy Candela ran for 202 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns, while Red Shannon added 138 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.

Quarterback Robert Somborn was the definition of a signal caller, throwing for 241 yards on 16 of 26 passing, while throwing for four touchdowns and zero picks. Receivers T.V. Willams and Connor Fuentes each caught two touchdowns.

McKinney High (1-0) will play its home opener next Thursday night at Ron Poe Stadium versus Frisco Heritage. Heritage lost 53-14 to Lovejoy High School on Friday night. Game time for next Thursday night is 7:30 p.m.
