Football Scoreboard: MHS Drops District Opener, While North Can’t Overcome Undefeated Lovejoy

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

The Lions lost 38-20 to Plano High School while the Bulldogs fell 24-17 in disappointing defeats for both squads.

McKinney High:

The Lions couldn’t overcome turnovers and penalties in their 38-20 defeat by Plano in their District 10-5A opener on Friday night. MHS committed seven penalties for 70 yards while losing the football two times by way of a fumble.

McKinney fell to 0-1 in District 10-5A and 4-2 overall, while Plano improved to 1-0 in district and 4-2 overall.

The Lions rushing game struggled against the Plano defense, gaining only 61 yards on 22 carries. Running back Red Shannon led the team with 64 yards on eight carries, while Antonio Oliver had the lone rushing touchdown on a two-yard run in the second quarter.

Quarterback Robert Somborn had another solid performance, throwing for 319 yards on 28-of-39 passing and tossing two touchdowns. Shannon led the team in receiving with 117 yards on nine receptions, while T.V. Williams and Dalon Willis each had one receiving score.

The Lions outgained the Wildcats in total yards 380-328, but Plano’s ability to capitalize on their mistakes and score in every quarter was too much for McKinney to overcome.

MHS will look to rebound next Thursday night as the Lions take on Plano East at Ron Poe Stadium in the team’s homecoming game. Plano East lost to Allen 56-0 on Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

McKinney North:

The Bulldogs lost to Lovejoy 24-17 on Friday night, falling to 1-2 in District 13-4A. Lovejoy stayed undefeated on the season in district play with a mark of 3-0.

Quarterback Ben Dutze struggled against a very stout Lovejoy defense, throwing for just 180 yards on 18-of-35 passing while throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. Receiver Gabe Constintine caught the lone touchdown for Dutze, which was a 15-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

Running back Ronald Jones led the team in rushing with 113 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown, a 13-yard score to tie the game at 7-7 late in the second quarter. Justin Jones carried the ball a game-high 18 times but only ran for 48 yards.

Lovejoy’s Nicholaas LaSane had the best game of the night for both teams, rushing for 11- yards on 13 carries while catching two passes for 99 yards, including a 75-yard strike from quarterback Bowman Sells in the second quarter.

North will try and even up its district record next Friday night when the Bulldogs host Wylie at Ron Poe Stadium on Friday night. Wylie defeated Greenville 50-7 at home on Friday night.

Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
