First Week of NFL Preseason is Tough on Alums from North, Boyd

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

As the MISD high school football practices kick off around town this week, three former McKinney players took another step in a very tedious, monthlong job interview to make an NFL roster for the 2012 season.

David Douglas, Jeff Fuller, and Raymond Radway have been in their respective teams’ training camps for almost three weeks. This past weekend marked the first week of the preseason in the NFL schedule. Every week TSB will recap each player’s game from the past weekend and preview what’s ahead!

David Douglas, New York Giants

Former McKinney North receiver David Douglas has turned heads at New York Giants camp this month, creating quite the battle for the sixth and final receiver spot on the roster. Douglas, who played for the University of Arizona, has had some incredible practices according to media members and head coach Tom Coughlin. Battling for the final spot, Douglas must beat out Ramses Barden, Dan DePalma, Brandon Collins, Isiah Stanback, and Julian Talley. Unfortunately for the former Bulldog, a quad injury kept Douglas out of Friday night’s game at the Jaguars. There is no timetable for his return to practice and the team remains cautious of when to bring him back to full participation. For an undrafted rookie in his first training camp, any long-term injury might be the hurdle that Douglas just can’t jump over.

The Giants will play the New York Jets on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The game will be on NFL Network.

Jeff Fuller, Miami Dolphins

While the release of former Pro Bowl wide out Chad Johnson will bump everyone up a spot on the depth charts, former McKinney Boyd player Jeff Fuller finds himself in a battle for playing time in a very crowded Miami Dolphins receiving corps. The team has 11 receivers on the roster, which means that finding a spot on the team will be hard for the former Bronco and Texas A&M Aggie.

On Friday night, Fuller caught two passes for 11 yards in the Dolphins’ 20-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs. Miami travels to Carolina on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game. If Fuller has any chance of making the 54-man roster at the end of camp, he will need big showings in the team’s final three games.

Raymond Radway, Dallas Cowboys

Fresh off of a season-ending injury in the Dallas Cowboys’ final preseason game last year against Miami, former McKinney North wide receiver Raymond Radway hopes to solve some of the teams problems at the receiver position with a strong camp and preseason.

While the former Bulldog did get some plays under his belt versus the Oakland Raiders on Monday night, the offensively starved Cowboys couldn’t quite get it going as Radway finished with zero catches on the evening in Dallas’ 3-0 victory. With the team having so many receiving questions after starters Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, a big second half of camp and some quality games in the preseason could see Radway stealing a roster spot in Big D.

The Cowboys stay out on the west coast to take on the San Diego Chargers on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game is on NFL Network and CBS 11.
