The Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Chestnut Square featuring the 17th Annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off is just around the corner … Saturday, June 9 to be exact.
Now’s the time for all you ice cream lovers to sign up to crank some of your very best homemade ice cream!
“I worrry that people think they have to run a manual ice cream freezer like the bicycle cranker in the picture,” said Cindy Johnson, Executive Director, Chestnut Square Historic Village. “That’s definitely not the case. We provide the ice, salt and electricity. You can use any kind of ice cream freezer you’d like…and they’re available all over McKinney at Target, Groom and Sons, Tractor Supply…you name it.”
It’s easy to participate in the Crank-Off. There’s no entry fee. All you need to do is provide two gallons of ice cream for judging and tasting. It’s a great team building experience for both families and organizations.
“We have crankers from all over: New Mexico, Louisianna, Arkansas, all over Texas, but last year it was a local person who won overall best,” Said Cindy Johnson.
And last year was the first year that the winning ice cream was offered for sale at Market Street and The Pantry restaurant in downtown McKinny making the winner famous throughout McKinney! This year’s ice cream winner will also make summer a little better in McKinney through sales at Market Street and restaurants on the square.
When Clyde Geer started the Crank-Off 17 years ago it was in response to a challenge from his father-in-law Killis Melton to come up with something better than a chili cookoff. We think he sure did!
Kick off YOUR summer the old-fashioned way…sign up to be a cranker in the 17th Annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off. Make a little bit of your own history right here in McKinney!
