Family Struggle Inspires McKinney Woman: A Team In Training Story

In May 2010, Shannon Lancaster of McKinney received the news that her brother-in-law, Philo, was diagnosed with Stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Shannon felt helpless because her sister, Michelle, and Philo lived in central Illinois. She wished she could be there to help her family in some way. Early in the morning of September 26, 2010 that feeling of helplessness went to a whole new level when Shannon’s 19 year old nephew was killed in a car accident.

Over the next few months, Shannon learned about the Team In Training Program. On May 5, Shannon signed up to participate in the Heels, Hills and Him Half Marathon to honor Philo. During the four months of mental and physical preparation that goes in to training for the 13.1 mile half marathon event, Shannon plans to raise $1,200 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society though her Team in Training page. In addition, Shannon is matching the first $1,200 and giving it to Philo and Michelle to offset their expenses of his recent stem cell transplant.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing financial aid to patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $640 million in research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

As the world’s largest endurance sports training program, Team In Training is the premier fundraising campaign for LLS. TNT provides four to five months of certified coaching, instructive clinics, and a supportive group of teammates who are committed to guiding you to victory in your first marathon, half marathon, hike, triathlon, or century ride. Since the program’s launch in 1988, TNT has trained more than 500,000 athletes, regardless of endurance level or experience. Today, Team In Training participants in the United States and Canada have raised more than $1 billion to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s blood cancer research and patient services initiatives.

“Team In Training helps participants take on seemingly impossible challenges, while giving them the opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives,” said Misty Aguero, TNT Director. “It is an exciting time to join a program that has changed the lives of not only the recipients of LLS support, but also the participants, who devote so much time and energy into such a noble cause.”

The North Texas Chapter of LLS is currently recruiting teams throughout the metroplex for exciting new events, including El Tour De Tucson in November, the White Rock Marathon and Half Marathon in Dallas in December, the Latin Music Half Marathon in Miami in December, and the Walt Disney World Marathon and Half Marathon in Orlando in January. Take the first step today and sign up for an informational meeting to learn more about what you stand to gain in joining Team In Training! We will introduce you to our sport-specific, certified coaches and our many amazing alumni who have insight into all aspects of TNT. Are you ready to make a difference?
