Not only did the Evans Panthers win the MISD Invitational Tournament for their first tournament championship title, but they followed that up with a District Championship.
As a result, Evans’ 7th grade boys basketball team accomplished two first for the program.
Coming into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, they started out by playing against an outmatched Johnson team, which had struggled all year. Evans jumped out early and the game was decided by the first quarter.
Next up was the No. 3 seed Faubion Lions. Once again, Evans’ press gave them an early lead which they maintained throughout the game. Evans cruised to a hard-fought but comfortable win, 40-30.
Next up was the undefeated and No. 1 seed. Highland Park. Once again the Panther press gave them several steals and easy buckets to take an early lead. The score at the end of the first was 16-6.
Both teams then started to find their grove and they played even for most of the 2nd quarter. Evans went up by 18 at one point but Highland Park finished strong with a mini run to make it 27-17 Evans at halftime.
HP came out pressing in the second half which enabled then to make not only make up the deficient but to take the lead 32-31. Evans then regrouped and settled down to tie the game 34-34 going into the fourth.
Evans’ defense shut down the big men for HP all game and they continued to do so as they started to extend the lead. With HP not finding any easy baskets and Evans hitting their foul shots down the stretch, they hung on for 42-37 victory.
It was a great win for the players, coaches and parents.
The team is made up of the following players: Dominic St. Leon, Matt Wagner, Jake Smith, Braylon Cyrus, Tavian White, Joseph Shaver Chris Mathey and Nick Vasser. Coaches Martinez and Estes led this team.
