Last month, McKinney Boyd was stunned by the news of girls soccer coach Jimmie Lankford’s resignation from his post. Before being hired to the head coach position at the newly opened McKinney Boyd high school in 2006, Lankford coached the McKinney North girls to a state title in the spring of that same year.
In 2008, the Lady Broncos defeated Wichita Falls Rider, 3-1, in the Class 4A state championship game. Two years later, the Lady Broncs’ would return to Austin for the title game but lost a 1-0 game to The Woodlands. This year, Boyd was on a mission for its second state title in five years and the Lady Broncos captured the top prize once again by defeating Colleyville 1-0 for the 5A state championship.
After news of Lankford’s departure became public, the DFW area was buzzing with questions about his possible replacement. Well, now we have our answer as Boyd athletic director Don Drake confirmed that the Broncos have promoted assistant coach Michele Estes to head coach of the defending state championship squad.
“I’m very grateful to MISD for giving me this opportunity,” Estes said. “I’m excited about the 2011-2012 season, we are returning a very talented group, have some very promising underclassmen, and a strong group of incoming freshman. I look forward to continuing the winning traditions of the McKinney Boyd Girls’ Soccer program.”
