Emmy Winner Steve Thomas Joins Habitat For Humanity Building Effort on Wednesday

Submitted by North Collin County Habitat For Humanity

Steve Thomas, Emmy Award-winning television personality and former host of the home improvement shows This Old House and Renovation Nation, will join North Collin County Habitat for Humanity and local home building professionals to prepare for dedication of 8 homes with families seeking decent and affordable housing.  The homes are being built in McKinney and Frisco as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz 2012.

On Wednesday, June 6,  at 9 a.m. he will join the Habitat ReStore at 2060 Couch Dr. to host a breakfast reception and chat with attendees regarding renovation projects.  At noon he will join Habitat on the job sites to thank the builders, sponsors and volunteers for all the work that they have invested in this project. He will also provide insight into his home renovation career.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join home builders who are helping to make Home Builders Blitz a success,” said Thomas. “With their help and support, Habitat will be able to make affordable housing a reality with even more families this year. The expertise and skill these home building professionals bring to the table is a welcome addition to Habitat’s efforts to build affordable housing.”

Over the course of his career, Thomas is recognized as the “ultimate home enthusiast” and an “expert-on-demand” on the home renovation process. A much-in-demand speaker as well as a home renovator, Thomas advocates for greener building and renovation techniques.

Thomas first worked with Habitat for Humanity during a 1990 trip to Charlotte to cover the launching of a new Habitat affiliate. He subsequently showcased the 1993 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Winnipeg, Canada, and thereafter continued to integrate coverage of Habitat’s activities into his professional projects.

Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz is a partnership between Habitat and the building community to build and renovate homes across the United States. Builders and Habitat affiliates work closely to organize all aspects of building, including securing subcontractors and suppliers, fundraising and seeking donations of materials. Builders participating in the program this year will work with more than 100 Habitat affiliates.

During this year’s event, the nationwide project seeks to build and renovate more than 200 homes, thanks to the skilled labor provided by local professional homebuilders and construction firms.

Darling Homes has built 12 homes in McKinney for Habitat, “We are so excited to build our 13th home for the Gonzales family.  This home will be a special ADA accessible home as the father sustained an injury that led to him being paralyzed from the waist down.  This will be a very special build and we are thrilled to be a partner on the Home Builders Blitz” said Steve Darling.

Locally, Darling Homes, K. Hovnanian, Noble Classic Homes, Rod Wede Signature Homes, Knight Custom Homes; Veranda Designer Homes, Construction and Remodel of North Texas, gathered subcontractors and suppliers to obtain materials and professional labor for the build.

Local sponsors of the week include an Anonymous Donor, Simpson Strong Tie, Mustang Technology Group, High Pointe Church of Christ, Trinity Presbyterian, Viewpoint Bank, Lions Club International, James Hardie, McKinney Lions Club, Stonebriar Community Church, First Baptist Church McKinney & Frisco, Frisco Rotary, City of McKinney CDBG, City of Frisco CDBG, Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, McKinney Community Development Corporation, Creekwood United Methodist Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, William Thomas, NCC Habitat Carpenters Club Members and St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church.
