Flags will be flying all over McKinney next year thanks to the local Rotary clubs.
The Rotary Club of McKinney Sunrise, which meets Wednesday mornings at Eldorado Country Club, set the standard in town with its successful holiday flag lease program.
Starting in January, the Rotary Club of McKinney that meets on Friday at Rick’s Chophouse in the Grand Hotel on the downtown square will start its own flag lease fund-raiser.
Frank Walker of the Rotary Club of McKinney said the programs won’t be competing.
“The McKinney Sunrise Rotary has been more than generous with their time and advice in setting up our flag program,” Walker said. “When we met with them, they said that they not only want us to do this, they said we want to encourage you to have a flag program. This is a really special program for McKinney.”
Carol Ownby leads the 30-member committee that will organize the flag lease program for the Friday lunch Rotary Club of McKinney.
How it works now: Flags are delivered for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.
Sunrise Rotary’s delivery service boundaries include established routes in Stonebridge Ranch and Eldorado neighborhoods: East of Custer Road, north of McKinney Ranch Road, south of Highway 380, and west of U.S. Highway 75.
Walker said the downtown club will handle the flag program west of Custer Road, north of Hwy. 380 and east of U.S. 75 and across the outer edge of the area from 720 to 121 and from 720 to Hwy. 380.
Once a homeowner or business joins the flag program, the Rotary places the flags for the holidays and then returns afterward to pick up the flags. The flags are the property of Rotary Club.
“The Sunrise program has been such a great success,” Walker said. “This will become our club’s largest fund-raiser each year, too. The flag lease program recognizes and honors the Patriotism that is built in Americans.”
The flag lease programs will fund the Rotary’s health, humanitarian and youth service programs.
Next Friday: A delegation of Japanese Rotarians will attend the Rotary luncheon in McKinney this Friday as part of the Japan-America Grassroots Summit that is taking place in North Texas from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3. … On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the group will attend the Texas Rangers game.
