Downtown McKinney was running amuck on Saturday morning – with more than 1200 runners, who hit the downtown area early to participate in the Melon Dash 5K. Runners came from all over the metroplex to experience running through the tree lined streets and, yes, rolling hills, in McKinney’s historic district and to support the North Texas Cat Rescue, which received a part of the revenues from the race.
Winning the race was Gabriel Zambrano, posting a time of 16:33. Zambrano, who said he was had hoped to break his best time of 16:08, said he came to McKinney to compete with a group of runners who would push him to the next level. A senior Ft. Worth’s Castleberry High School, Zambrano said he felt the heat – temps were already hovering in the mid 80’s at the time of the race – added to the difficulty of beating his previous best time.
The race was held in conjunction with the Farmers’ Market at Chestnut Square which takes place each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon through October.
