David Dorman: The Paycheck and Taxes

By David Dorman, TSB Contributor

You work all week, you get your paycheck, you look at it itemized out, and you will note that you have federal income tax withheld, FICA tax withheld ( social security ), and Medicare tax withheld. But low and behold, the tax cycle is just about to start. What I mean by that is, you are taxed on everything. I recently read an article by a gentleman by the name of Charlie Reese. He is a former columnist for the Orlando Centennial Newspaper. He started a list of all the
things in our daily lives that are taxed. I have added to that list, and here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

Accounts Receivable Tax

Building Permit Tax

CDL License Tax

Cigarette Tax

Corporate Income Tax

Dog License Tax

Excise Taxes

Federal Income Taxes

Federal Unemployment Tax ( FUTA)

Fishing License Tax

Food License Tax

Fuel Permit Tax

Gasoline Tax (currently 44.75 cents per gallon)

Gross Receipts Tax

Hunting License Tax

Inheritance Tax

Inventory Tax

IRS Interest Charges IRS penalties (tax on top of tax)

Liquor Tax

Luxury Taxes

Marriage License Tax

Medicare Tax

Personal Property Tax

Property Tax

Real Estate Tax

Service Charge Tax

Social Security Tax

Road Usage Tax

Recreational Vehicle Tax

Sales Tax (everything else not on this list, including toilet paper)

School Tax

State Income Tax

State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)

Telephone 911 Fee Tax

Telephone Federal Excise Tax

Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax

Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Taxes

Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax

Telephone Municipal Right of Way Tax

Telephone Recurring and Nonrecurring Charges Tax

Telephone State and Local Tax

Telephone Usage Charge Tax

Utility Taxes

Vehicle License Registration Tax

Vehicle Sales Tax

Watercraft Registration Tax

Well Permit Tax

Workers Compensation Tax

Now I know that I have probably missed some, so any reader that is interested in compiling
additional taxes would be greatly appreciated.

When you hear politicians say that you are in the 35% bracket, 25% bracket, or no bracket at all, that is because 47% of the working population pay no income taxes. But in reality, we are taxed and fee’d up the gazoo! So I’m not sure if we are not taxed at the 60% bracket! To give you an example, I recently retired and went on Social Security. Now mind you, I have worked since I was 17 years old, that makes almost 50 years. I have come to find out that I’m going to be taxed on my social security income. So Washington made a decision, not too long ago, to tax it’s citizens on a tax. Don’t you just love it?

Here’s the slap in the face – not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago. We had no national debt, our middle class was the largest in the world, and 95% of all mothers stayed home to raise their children. As I try and reconcile what the 545 folks in Washington have done to us, it is simply mind boggling. Those Constitutional Amendments that I spoke about last week are more important by the hour. I would ask all of my fellow citizens to really think hard before
they cast a vote for any career politician.

Quote of the day

Ronald Reagan probably made the most profound statement:
