Drivers struggling through the pains of construction on Custer Road from Stonebridge Drive to US 380 may be comforted to know the project is expected to be finished by April of 2012.
When complete, the road will be six lanes, divided by a grass median with turn lanes, resembling Custer Road south of Sam Rayburn Tollway (SH 121), says Ruben Delgado, Director of Engineering for Collin County. About the time this project is completed, however, construction
will begin in order to widen Custer South of Stonebridge Drive to the Tollway (SH121), a project that should take less than a year.
Several state roadways in Collin County are either currently being improved, or soon will be, thanks to a unique agreement with the North Texas Tollway Authority to spend several billion dollars in the North Texas Region from revenue generated by tolling Sam Rayburn Tollway.
These Regional Toll Revenue Funds are being used to widen Central Expressway from the Sam Rayburn Tollway to US 380, including the interchange at the toll way and US 75, says Delgado.
For motorists who feel like the Custer Road project is taking too long, Mr. Delgado says the Custer expansion has been shepherded along by City and County engineers since 1988, overseeing funding, acquiring right of way, engineering, environment impact studies, etc.
“The state started its planning in the late 1980s, and by the time it is all said and done, we’re looking at 2012,” he says. “It’s amazing, isn’t it.”
Custer will be shut down partially on Wednesday and Thursday, May 18-19. As previously reported on TSB, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days, contractor Mario Sinacola and Sons will close Custer Road between Virginia Parkway and Eldorado Parkway. The brief closure is necessary for the safety of the traveling public as well as the contractor while beams are set in place on the new Rowlett Creek bridge.
This work is part of a $33.7 million construction project to widen Custer Road from 2-lanes to 6-lanes between South Stonebridge Drive and U.S. 380.
