Collin Theatre Center to Open with Regional Premiere of Rust

The Collin Theatre Center is elated to present its first production of the 2012-2013 season, the regional premiere of Rust by playwright Austin Bunn.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. on Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 10-13 and at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 and Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 13-14. All shows are at Collin College’s John Anthony Theatre at the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano.

Tickets, which can be purchased at www.collintheatrecenter.com , are $10 and seating is general admission.

Bunn will also hold lectures and master classes that are free and open to the public. At 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 in the John Anthony Theatre at the Spring Creek Campus, Bunn will host a Q&A lecture followed by the performance of Rust (general admission pricing) with “talkback” at 8 p.m. At 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, Bunn will host a master class followed by the performance of Rust and a reception in the John Anthony Theatre at Spring Creek Campus.

A documentary play created by Bunn in collaboration with Working Group Theater, Rust is an illuminative, provocative and probing play directed by Gail Cronauer that asks the question, “What happens when we wake up from the American dream?” Rust is drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with people whose lives were changed when General Motors closed its plant in Wyoming, Mich. in 2008.

Bunn, who specializes in creative and dramatic writing and fiction, received the Iowa Arts Fellowship to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, where he received his M.F.A. in playwriting and in fiction. Bunn received his bachelor’s in American Studies from Yale University. Bunn is also an assistant professor in dramatic writing and screenwriting at Cornell University.

His recent publications include “A Killer Life: How an Independent Film Producer Survives Deals and Disasters in Hollywood and Beyond,” “Bonsai Kitten,” a story in Monster Manual, “What Gets Saved,” which appears in Ghosttown, “Bromosexual,” which appears in The Advocate and “Curious Father,” published in Bloom.
