Collin College to Host `Deaf, Deaf World’ Simulation

collin college logo 2“Deaf, Deaf World,” hosted from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 at the Spring Creek Campus Living Legends Conference Center (2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway), will provide a simulation of deaf culture, allowing participants to get a feel for the unique experience of living as a deaf individual.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience life in an entirely deaf environment through stage performances of stories, comedies and skits, as well as learn some basic American Sign Language. In addition, they will become familiar with deaf history, specifically learning about civil rights and the deaf community.

Dean of Academic Affairs Don Weasenforth noted U.S. Census data estimates there are 357,574 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals living in Texas.

“The deaf community is a significant part of society,” Weasenforth said. “Deaf, Deaf World will highlight the community’s contributions to and challenges within the larger public by immersing participants in local deaf culture.”

Admission is free. Donations will be accepted, and proceeds will go to the Collin College interpreter student scholarship fund.
