Collin College Hosts Earth Day 2013

Submitted by Marisela Cadena-Smith, Collin College

Students are going green during Collin College Earth Day 2013.

Led by student organization Collin Association for Sustainable Efforts (CASE), Earth Day events, from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Boulevard in Frisco, will include everything from live performances and culinary art displays to games and service opportunities.

Faculty sponsor for Earth Day events Heinrich Goetz said the first Earth Day in 1970 was held as a protest for the direction pollution and waste were heading in the U.S. Soon after, legislation was enacted placing more emphasis on a clean and sustainable environment.

“Today, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide,” Goetz said. “Earth Day is a day for us to celebrate the beauty and wonder of the biodiversity on our planet, but it is also a day for us to reflect upon our shared responsibilities of respecting that biodiversity, protecting natural habitats and using resources in such a way that future generations will have the same opportunities we have.”

Eager to make that kind of world impact, the Global Diplomatic Society will be raising money to fund the construction of a drinking water well in Africa with a dunk tank. To inspire outdoor and physical activities, a volleyball court and lawn games will be set up for public use.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these free festivities in the quads directly in front of the Preston Ridge Campus library.
