City Encourages “Lights Out McKinney!” To Celebrate Earth Hour March 26

On Saturday March 26, millions of people in more than 130 countries around the world will unite to celebrate the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour in the annual Earth Hour event. The City of McKinney Office of Environmental Stewardship (OES) encourages residents to celebrate Earth Hour with “Lights Out McKinney!”.

“Energy conservation, like turning off lights, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves air quality. Excessive artificial lighting also blocks our ability to see stars at night and even interferes with bird migration. By taking part in Earth Hour, McKinney is committed to preserving those aspects of our community that make it an attractive and healthy place to live and work,” said OES Manager Julie Smith.

The Goddard School, a local preschool, also plans its own honoring of the day. In case you missed that story you can click here:

During the weekend of Earth Hour, the City of McKinney will be conducting a competition between city teams by building facility and will track reductions in energy consumption and cost savings highlighting the applications of a recently installed energy monitoring system funded through a Department of Energy grant initiative. Employees are encouraged to curtail usage of non-essential energy intensive devices and processes.

Please visit the city website www.mckinneytexas.org and look for the “Lights Out McKinney!” logo to take a pledge to do your part for Earth Hour and learn more about how you and your neighbors can organize local activities.
