The second annual Christmas In July 1K/5K Fun Run benefiting the Community Food Pantry of McKinney will be held this Saturday, July 23, at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of Stonebridge United Methodist Church in McKinney. Cost for the run is $30 plus 5 cans of food for the 5K race and $10 plus five cans of food for the 1K race. The fun run, sponsored by the church’s SportsRAC sports ministry, began as a way to continue the generosity that presents itself during the holidays into the time of year where community generosity is at its lowest.
“In the summer months, community giving and involvement declines due to the scorching heat and vacationing schedules,” says Rev. David Lessner, Associate Pastor. “At Christmas In July, our aim is to keep the community giving all year round.”
Last year, 193 runners donated 650 cans of food. Additionally, sponsors’ gifts combined with race fees purchased 35 Thanksgiving Boxes for the Meals on Wheels program. Approximately 350 runners are expected at this year’s race where they will also enjoy snow cones, music, massages, health screenings, activities and more.
Community sponsors for the Christmas In July 1K/5K Fun Run are: Texas Pediatric Dentistry; Methodist Hospital of McKinney; McKinney Boot Camps; Linda Grossman Team – Keller Williams Realty; The Texas Health Clinics; McKinney Health and Wellness; North Texas Surveying; and Loughmiller-Higgins Attorneys at Law.
Register early at www.mysumc.org/sports. Walk-up registrations are welcome. Race packets may be picked up from 6-7 a.m. Saturday, July 23.
