Chess Lessons at McKinney Performing Arts Center Have Started

Chess lessons start up again this Wednesday March 21st at the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in downtown McKinney.

If your student show a desire to play chess, we’ve got a great Chess program to better understand the game, improve their play while providing a setting for social interaction around the game of chess.

The beginner class starts at 4pm and will teach chess basics including board placement, chess rules/etiquette and piece value.

We are expanding the intermediate class into two sections – both at 5pm.  The beginner/intermediate class will closely follow the Checkmate! activity booklet, covering chess notation and discovering checkmating patterns, and briefly expanding on the Opening, Middle-Game and End Game Principles.

The additional intermediate/advance class will be pick up from the above and will spend more time discussing the Opening Principles, and End Game and recognizing checkmating patterns and will be taught by Jonathan Allen, 2008 Texas Amateur Champion.  A very experienced chess coach, he is involved in the chess community as the VP of the Dallas Chess Club.  He presents the material in a way the students can easily understand and use over and over again in their games.

The advance class at 6pm will go to in-depth discussions and examples of the middle game, pawn formations, executing most efficient checkmates and reviewing chess master games, this class is also taught by Jonathan Allen.

Most of the students currently in a chess clubs would fit into the intermediate or advanced placement.  If you are not sure, just let me know and I’ll help you decide what’s best for him/her.

Open play is come and go anytime between 4-7pm and is open to the family, both students and adults.  The 8 wk session family fee is $40 or $20 for an  individual $20 or $5 drop in fee.  We’ve got everything you need to stop by and get in a few games of chess.

The open play fee is included in the lessons fee – as well as the tournament fee.   You don’t need to sign up for open play if you are taking the lessons.

The next McKinney Chess tournament is May 16th – please mark your calendar and let your chess clubs know.  We’re looking forward to seeing many area schools represented and will award team trophies.   You just need 2 players and top 4 scores count for a team score.   This is a great way to compete and celebrate your chess clubs’ hard work.
