Chatterbox: The Lowdown Around Town – Beginnings and Endings

Happy New Year everybody!  It’s hard to believe that it’s 2012?  Yeah, right?  As I write this column, I’m tuning in to the Iowa Caucus, wondering why I really care about what happens in Iowa. So on to the news around town.

In case you’ve missed it, Dunkin Donuts has been open for a couple of weeks now and will continue to offer specials throughout January. For example, the sausage pancake bites are currently $1.59. DD is located at 3201 W Eldorado Pkwy. (the corner of Hardin and Eldorado Pkwy.) Not so much a fan of their coffee, but gotta love the doughnuts with the maple glaze – could ya add a little bacon on those pleeeeze?

Sadly, Saxby’s Coffee shop on W. Virginia Pkwy has closed, but never fear coffee lovers, a new kid in town, Scooters Coffeehouse will move into the same location. I’m not familiar with Scooters, although their web site mentions that the company began in Omaha, Nebraska.  Have any of you tried it?

And, speaking of coffee, Gigi’s Coffee Shop in downtown McKinney (formerly Coffee N Cream) has changed owners and the new name is Coffee2 (Coffee Squared). The new owner is Barry Pennings and his son, Russell, runs the shop. Things seemed organized – the coffee pots weren’t empty – and they bake cookies and some desserts on the premises.

I’m still waiting for the Louisiana St. Grill, steak and seafood restaurant just east of Hwy. 5, to open its doors!  Drove by recently and although it looks ready to open any day, still no dice.

Is there a rocker inside you just waiting for the right stage to emerge? School of Rock is here – yep, right in McKinney at 1600-1608 Louisiana, across from First Baptist Church. Although School of Rock is officially open, I hear that they are having a big grand opening later in Jan. – more details to come!  I’m anxious to check it out.

More endings….The Sample Shop on Louisiana St. in downtown McKinney has closed its doors. Chic Charm, on N. Kentucky Street in downtown McKinney, also disappeared over the New Year’s weekend, leaving nothing but some trash behind the locked doors of their shop. Gnarly!  Never fear though, when one door shuts, another door opens.

That’s it for now, peeps. If you have “news” to share, don’t forget to let us know
