Chatterbox: The Lowdown Around Town – Arrests, Hirings and More

I found out that a few months ago, that Chef Mikel de Luis Trevino, head chef at Cafe Malaga, is one of the competitors in the new Food Network television show, Chef Hunter. Does he have what it takes to win? The show aired this past week and, although my lips are sealed about the end result, you can catch Chef and his culinary expertise in a future episode. Chef Hunter is on Thursdays at 9 p.m.  Set those DVR’s!

Word around town is that the McKinney Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has hired John Valencia to oversee the Business Retention and Expansion Program (BREP). Valencia takes over the position held by Greg Simms, who left to become EDC Director in Greenville, Tx.

Valencia was the General Manager at lthe ocal Primo Microphones for 27 years and most recently COO for Walbuck, LTD, the leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial chalk for a variety of applications and servicing over 23 different industries. Interesting that EDC made this hire before hiring a new President to replace David Pitstick who left earlier this year.

“America runs on Dunkin'”. Yep, McKinney will be adding one more donut stop to the plethora of choices already around town. Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening on Eldorado in the location of the former Blockbuster store near the intersection of Eldorado Pkwy and Hardin Rd. Set to open sometime in Dec., seems it’s the hands down fav coffee stop of many in town. Geez, what will this do to the first Starbucks that came to McKinney – the one on Hardin Rd. in the Tom Thumb shopping center?

The holiday season is right around the corner and since Ty Lake has taken over at Director as McKinney Performing Arts Center, in the heart of downtown McKinney, a holiday show has been added to the schedule. On Friday, Dec. 9, celebrate the season at McKinney Performing Arts Center with country music and Broadway star Gary Morris at 8:00 pm in MPAC’s Courtroom Theater. For more details, click here

I’ve been on a mission to scope out the origin of some talk about an investor who is considering building some condos / residential units in McKinney’s downtown area (don’t know where exactly). Gnarly!  Seems like a plan, as McKinney has begun to attract more retirees, as well as young couples. What do you think, Chatty followers?

So fellow McKinneyites, I’m sure you join me in being shocked at the arrest of Dr. David Russell, local chiropractor, for aggravated assault of a child as allegedly, Russell inappropriately touched two girls during groin treatments. Sadly, I hate this kind of news for our town and especially for those girls who were involved.

McKinney Summer Musicals has announced that they will do “My Fair Lady” for the big 2012 production. The group has never done this particular musical, so should be fun to see what they can do with the British accents and this popular story of girls makes good.

Ending on a high note, I sampled the Wagu beef filet at Square Burger recently and, wow!, melt in your mouth fabulous. If you haven’t tried it, tell Brandon at Square Burger that “Cathy” sent you. It’s worth it. The beef is supplied by McKinney’s own Local Yocal meat purveyor, Matt Hamilton.

That’s it for this edition of the lowdown around town. Chatty Cathy is always on the prowl for info, so if you have some to share, email me!
