Each week McKinney Boyd football coach Don Drake and his players have a special rally. On the day before the game, the team invites special needs students to the indoor training facility. The two groups share a few minutes of encouragement, motivation and honor, culminating in a classic team “1,2,3!” cheer.
According to Drake, this is a tradition that allows his football players a chance to give back to the other kids in school.
“We are all about relationships here at Boyd,” he said. “We started this several years ago, giving our football kids an opportunity to meet and get to know some of the other kids on our campus.”
Principal Rick McDaniel has always believed in making McKinney Boyd a tradition-rich school and praises Drake for developing this particular ritual.
“This has become a tradition of ours and a very important event to us,” said McDaniel. “Our football team understands how blessed they are that they can do the things they do. We’re teaching class from the top down and Coach Drake is to be credited for all of this.”
The “Hero” this week among this very special group was Darian Davenport who was recognized by senior Wide Receiver Patrick Ladd.
