Carpe Diem Y’all: Are you A Fan?

I am a fan.  Are you?  I looked up the definition.  It reads, “One who is filled with enthusiasm; one who is ardently absorbed in an interest or pursuit.  Oktoberfest in downtown McKinney is upon us.  It begins at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23rd and runs through Saturday, September 24th.  This family friendly event offers something for every member of the family, but, I am particularly drawn to, and am a huge fan of, those people who are combining Good Times with the Good Causes of which they are ardently absorbed.

Laura Moore with the assistance from community volunteers is constructing a street labyrinth built entirely out of cleaning products.  These products will later be donated to The Samaritan Inn, Collin County’s only homeless program.  The Walk A Mile interactive art installation will be open for the entirety of Oktoberfest and will be located in front of Laura Moore Fine Arts Studios at 107 S. Tennessee St.  There is still time to donate cleaning products at Moore’s studio, or any where you see the Walk A Mile poster displayed.

Karen Klassen is offering free pancakes.  Who isn’t a fan of free pancakes?  Sharing Spoons, the charity division of Spoon’s Café, will host the first Fastnachtsdienstag (a really long German word for Pancake Day) to coincide with Oktoberfest.  It begins Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.  Sharing Spoons will flip pancakes till they are flipped out.  The event takes place outside Gather at 207 E. Virginia St.  Participants can purchase chairs inside Gather for $20.00.  Proceeds raised will directly benefit the Alzheimer’s Association satellite office at the Medical Center of McKinney Wysong Campus.  40 % will go toward research.  The remainder will go to fund education and support groups, and the organization’s 24/7 helpline.

And finally, Shannon Winburn.  Winburn’s call to me this morning reminds me that the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is also upon us.  Winburn is in the process of raising the funds she needs in order to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk.  She begins her walk on November 4th, in celebration of the recovery of her Mom and survivor, Diana Strickland, and on behalf of those still out there fighting like a girl.  Her goal is to raise $2300.00.  She is also collecting new and gently used Bras for the Cause.  For more information contact 469-219-7642.

Ladies, my hat is off to you.  Count me in as one of your biggest fans.  And, on behalf of all those who benefit because of your efforts, your enthusiasm and your ardent interest in your pursuits, thank you.  Carpe Diem Y’all, Michele
