Students at Caldwell Elementary School have embraced the “Terrific Kids” reading program with enthusiasm and achievement. The program, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of McKinney, is designed to improve students’ reading fluency and comprehension, while instilling a love of reading.
Each student reads at his or her own level and meets with their teacher to set a reading goal for each nine-week period during the year. When a student reaches their nine-week goal, they are rewarded with a certificate for a free item at a local merchant. Chris Clark, principal at Caldwell, is very pleased with the improvement in reading levels at Caldwell.
In addition to the individual awards, each grade level class from grades 1-5 with the highest achievement level receives an in-class award celebration. These celebrations include healthy snacks, a presentation by the Kiwanis and often times a guest speaker. The class with the highest overall achievement also earns their teacher a special gift and a gift card to Barnes & Nobles.
The classes winning celebrations for the third nine-weeks were: Ms. Bryant – 1st, Ms. Robinson – 2nd, Ms Amlin – 3rd, Ms. Mellado 4th & Ms. Cea – 5th. Ms. Amlins 3rd grade class earned to overall highest achievement level.
The “Terrific Kids” program is also supported by local merchants, including McDonalds, CiCi’s Pizza, Dairy Queen, Hutchins Bar-B-Q and Barnes & Noble.
