Burks Elementary School Honored as First Healthy Zone School

Burks Elementary School celebrated its selection Tuesday, March 29 as the first school to be honored as part of the Healthy Zone School Recognition Program, an innovative initiative aimed at fighting childhood obesity.

The program created by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and The Cooper Institute offers training and financial assistance to schools to create healthier environments and recognizes schools that have already become healthy zones.

“We are honored to be the very first school to accept this award,” Karin Klemm, Burks Elementary Physical Education teacher said. “We will set the standard for every other school in the nation that is applying for this award. I believe our kids feel so special for receiving this honor. They are excited every day to show their lunch and snacks as they know this is going to make them healthier and smarter.”

Klemm said she sees a huge difference even in the staff over the past couple of years. Because many staff members are eating better and living
a healthier lifestyle, Klemm says everyone is feeling better and has more energy. She says this increased motivation filters down to the students as well.”

“Our hope is that we can reach as many people as possible in our District as well as others throughout the nation and change this crisis of obesity that we are facing,” Klemm added.

As a recipient of the award, Burks Elementary School will continue to strive to train their campus, community, friends, and family on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A total of nine schools nationwide will receive a Healthy Zone School award over the next three years.

“We will be teaching all schools healthy procedures,” Klemm added, “and how to become a healthy zone school just like Burks!”

“Our hope is that we can reach as many people as possible in our District as well as others throughout the nation and change this crisis of obesity that we are facing.”
